For renovations, cable routes and switch positions need planning before walls and ceilings are closed. Final fittings are installed later, in sequence with cabinetry, finishes and the other trades.
Choosing your lighting
Choose the light, not just the fitting
More downlights are not always the answer. A useful layout balances task lighting, general light and the features you want to highlight, with switches and dimmers where you can use them.
Flickering or buzzing needs diagnosis, not an assumed lamp replacement. For a burning smell, sparking or visible heat damage, stop using the light, keep away and call from a safe place. Do not touch a fitting to check its temperature. For smoke, fire or immediate danger, leave and call 000.

Check circuits, mounting and cable access. For renovations, coordinate cable installation before the wall and ceiling linings close.
